A Christian marriage is supposed to be a physical dimension reflecting the spiritual dimension of a union between Christ and the Church. This mystery is the mystery that exists between Christ and the church and marriage is supposed to be a reflection of that mystery. The truth of the matter is that if you don’t understand the mystery of the union between Christ and the church, your marriage is going to be an aberration, inconsistent with original curving point. And you begin to construct a kind of marriage that does not mirror the spiritual union of the Christ and the church.
As Diana Hagen rightly wrote in her book: “Our understanding of the relationship God has with His children is a direct correlation to our understanding of marriage relationship.” Without that spiritual understanding we have absolutely no concept of the sacrifice that is necessary to allow marriage to meet the needs of two individuals involved and to meet the standards set by God Almighty. Most Christian marriage are failing because of ignorance of this great mystery.
Christian in the western world has a another definition for marriage which is not consistent with the original pattern. It is impossible for a Christian to marry an unbeliever and expect such marriage to prosper and be totally blessed by God. The reason is this: the marriage is mirroring another spiritual dimension which is completely different from the spiritual union between Christ and the church. (2 Corinthians 6:14,16).
It is imperative to underscore the fact that until the physical structure mirrors exactly the spiritual dimension of the mystery, a spirit cannot fill it. Most relationships and marriages constructed by many Christians do not in any way reflect the spiritual dimension of mystery that exists between Christ and the church. Therefore, it cannot stand the tests of time, it cannot produce the godly seeds God is looking for (Malachi 2:15).
