WHAT IS SEXTING?

Sexting refers to the sending, receiving, or forwarding of sexually explicit messages, photographs, or videos by mobile phones or any digital devices. The term sexting is a blend of two words, sex and texting.

Examples of sexting

  1. Sending sexual images as jokes.
  2. Sending nude pictures or half-naked pictures of yourself.
  3. Sexual text messages like:
    a. ‘I will allow you to do anything you want with me.’
    b. ‘I need you inside of me.’
    c. ‘You make me so wet.’

Why do people sext?
1) ‘LOVE’
Some people sext because they think they have fallen in love. Such people have full trust in their lovers and so do anything to keep them. But the reality is that sexting only keeps ungodly people. Never try to preserve your relationship with sext. It is what God keeps that is kept! Love does not delight in evil, and sexting is evil. That means people who sext are really not acting from love but lust!

2) CURIOSITY
People also sext out of evil curiosity, I should say. They want to see before marriage what should be seen after marriage. After sexting to satisfy your lover’s curiosity, the next request is to explore and experiment. The devil is at work!

3) PRESSURE
People also sext out of pressure from lovers or peers. Beware, child of God! Don’t allow anything or anyone to pressurize you to do what you will later regret. It’s either you offend the world and please God or you please the world and offend God. Take your stand! No godly person will ask you for a sext. Receiving sext from a would-be marriage partner is a red flag. Think twice!

Effects of sexting
1) Sexting breeds lustful thoughts which lead to masturbation and other sexual immoralities.

2) Blackmailing. Your sexts can also be used to blackmail you when there is a breakup. There has been instances where people blackmail their former lovers by threatening to release their nude pictures or private messages. There are dangerous dungeons this blackmail can lead you into. Prevention is better than cure!

3) Your lover may mistakenly resend it. How would you feel as a Christian to see your nude pictures and what you thought to be private messages flying on social media? Sexting can destroy your reputation when your sext backfires and lands in wrong hands.

4) Sexting hinders your personal relationship with God. 1 Thessalonians 4:3 says; “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality.’’ Sexting is an act of sexual immorality and engaging in it is an act of disobedience to God. Disobedience can separate you from God just as it separated Adam and Eve from God. Beware!

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming” (Colossians 3:2-6).
