“And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes” (1 Timothy 2 :9).
The verse above is the word of God through Apostle Paul to Christian women. Though Apostle Paul here referred to women, Christian men can equally learn from it.
Clothing is a language. It is a non-verbal way of speaking about the wearer to the viewers. Your clothing expresses your sex, age, class, occupation, origin, and character. What you have on the body reflects what you have in your body. In other words, your clothing expresses your content. It gives evidence of the nature you possess.
Dressing portrays your identity. You don’t need to tell people you are Christian, they must find out themselves from your way of life, which includes your dressing. Your life as a Christian is to portray Christ to the world, so that unbelievers will see you and see Christ in you.
It is important to note that how the world defines beauty is different from how the Bible defines beauty. To be sensual in appearance is not beauty in the eyes of God, but a deadly trap for men. Beware if the world calls your appearance ‘sexy’ ‘hot’ or ‘romantic’, for Christian women dress to be beautiful and not sensual. Your romantic dressing must be private for your spouse, not the public.
Dressing sexy in public makes you destructive. If you are for God, then let your appearance attract people to God, not to destruct them from God. Remember, the devil may appear as an angel of light to deceive, an angel of light cannot appear as a devil. Your appearance matters!
