From years of working as a Marriage Counselor, I have come to the conclusion that, many people who marry do not understand why they are marrying, they don’t know the importance of marriage. I say so due to the things they value and the things they fight over.
If one is willing to part with any amount of money, no matter how large, for a product then it means the product is of more value to them than the money. It means the product is more important to them than the money. The money is just a means to get the product. In other words, the money is the currency for buying the product.
If the product was not valuable to them, they won’t spend on it. It is same with marriage; if your marriage is not more valuable to you, you won’t spend on it. Your marriage is more important to you than the money you spent on it. Your marriage is more important than the bride price, your marriage is more important to you than the suit or wedding gown or a wedding venue, or food served, or date of the marriage.
What is marriage, marriage is the relationship between husband and wife, how husband and wife relate; how they treat each other, with love and respect. There cannot be marriage if there is no husband or wife. If you and your partner have a bad relationship, it is needless to prepare for a wedding. Doing that equates to spending so much to get a product which is bad or dysfunctional.
Instead of spending time, money and energy on material stuff just to get married, take care of the core things that strengthen the bond between you and your partner. Money will always expose a bad relationship. The core things that keep marriage is how honest, open and transparent you are to each other. How much you love, forgive and stand by each other; How you respect, honour and value each other. How you serve each other’s needs and be there for each other.
No matter how much you spend on your marriage, things like lies, dishonesty, unfaithfulness, abuse or maltreating your spouse, ignoring each other, can end the relationship. Your marriage will only travel far as long as you work on it. Each time you get into a fight or have a misunderstanding with your spouse, look for the very thing you are fighting over, look for the solution together as a couple. Seek help if you fail.
Don’t let your ego, anger, pride, people’s opinion and perspective get in the way of your marriage, that is how you lose your marriage.
