1) POOR HUMAN RELATIONSHIP: Maintaining good relationship is key to living and leading. You can’t lead someone you can’t influence- and you seldom influence people without connecting to them. Connect with your followers like Ruth and Naomi,( Ruth 1:11-16)

2) UNCLEAR VISION AND POOR COMMUNICATION: People will do nothing or oppose what they don’t understand. This is why it’s difficult to lead or to be followed where there is no clear vision. The vision must be stated clear to your team, communicate clearly and avoid assumptions.(Hai.2:3)

3) FOCUSING ON THINGS/RESULTS INSTEAD OF PEOPLE: Leadership is not about maintaining things, it’s about developing people. (1The.5:11-15) Too often, leaders focus exclusively on driving the achievement of the team’s goals and neglect the inner needs and aspiration of the people. If you help people get and achieve their personal goals, they will submit to your leading and contribute exponentially towards achieving the general goals of the team.

4) BEING UNAVAILABLE AND UNACCESSIBLE: The fact that leaders need to delegate tasks should not mean emotional detachment. Leaders who assign tasks and walk away without close observation will definitely encounter problem.

5) NEGLECTING FEEDBACK ON THE PERFORMANCE OF BOTH THE LEADER AND THE FOLLOWERS: Feedback is key in monitoring progress. Good leaders uses feedback to strengthen themselves as well as their organization/team.

6) INEFFECTIVE MEASURES FOR MANAGING CONFLICT: Conflict can erupt where two or three people are working together. Conflicting issues that are not properly addressed block cooperation and alignment with the common goals.

7) NOT DRIVING CHANGE: The only person that wants change is a wet baby. People resist change because of the fear of unknown consequence or pains that might come along with the transition. Leaders as positive change agents, needs to explain the benefits of change and navigate ways that encourages innovation.

8) MANAGING ACTIVITIES INSTEAD OF LEADING PEOPLE: Management is about controlling, administering and planning activities, and by extension people. Leadership, on the other hand, involves inspiring and bringing out the best in people. Many thought they were leading their organisation only to realized that they were just managing. Are you Leading or Managing?

9) FOCUSING ON EXTRINSIC MOTIVATORS WHILE NEGLECTING INTRINSIC MOTIVATORS: Most leaders focus on extrinsic motivators like bonuses, promotions, and other artificial rewards and neglect intrinsic motivators like being challenged positively, learning new things, making an important difference or developing inherent talents that inspired.

10) COMPLAINING INSTEAD OF CORRECTING: Too many leaders ignorantly nags, complain, criticize and condemn their followers instead of correcting and rebuking where necessary.
Avoid complaining, condemning and criticising your team players.
